Antonio Vrankovic Signs Overseas But May Get Distracted
He’s in a gorgeous location. Work may not seem that important.
This is pretty cool: former Blue Devil Antonio Vrankovic has signed with CBA Gran Canaria II, a Spanish team out of the Canary Islands.
We don’t completely understand their system but here’s what the official site says: “The LEB Plata is the third division of the Spanish basketball system, which is the second basketball division maintained by the SPF (Spanish Basketball Federation). The winner and runner-up of the LEB Plata are promoted to the LEB Oro league.”
Vrankovic is limited athletically - he has heavy legs - but he has great hands and his grasp of the game is incredibly sharp. He is just 23 and like all big men it takes a while to completely mature. He’ll never be quick but he’ll continue to get stronger and in a few years no one is going to want to mess with him very much.
Fun facts about the Canary Islands: It’s not named for Canarys but rather for dogs (Latin: Canarias or possibly seals, which the Romans called Sea Dogs.
And secondly, many will remember the late and missed Hollerin’ Contest from Spivey’s Corner, NC. There is a parallel tradition there but one that uses whistling. The idea is the same: to communicate basic information or emergencies over significant distance.
Also the weather is nice year round and the beaches look good and they have Carnival. He may never come back.
