Kieran Trippier assisted Alvaro Morata’s winning goal as Atletico Madrid defeated Getafe in their opening La Liga match.
The former Tottenham Hotspur player was named in Diego Simeone’s starting line up for the match at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, which was the venue for the North London club’s heartbreaking defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League final.
Trippier picked up the ball on the right side of the pitch in the 23rd minute and played a beautiful cross onto the head of the former Chelsea forward.
The right-back’s contribution caused some fans to react on Twitter, with some even questioning the decision of parting company with him during the summer for £20million (BBC) without recruiting a replacement.
Trippier’s place at Spurs has been filled in the first two matches of the Premier League campaign by academy product Kyle Walker-Peters, with Serge Aurier yet to feature.
Juan Foyth, another right-back option has been sidelined through suspension and injury.
Here’s what some supporters had to say on Twitter.
Trippier didn't cross once like that for us! #COYS

Trippier wasn’t good enough and needed to be improved but with no replacement it was pointless and has made us weaker at RB

Yeah but while team was never actually great last season trippier was just a bit of a scapegoat who’s season crumbled to pieces after the own goal

We should 100% not have sold Trippier if we were never going to replace
