Greta Thunberg sets sail to US climate conference on carbon neutral yacht
Greta Thunberg has set sail to a US climate conference on board a carbon neutral yacht.
The 16-year-old climate change activist boarded a 60ft racing yacht named Malizia II at Plymouth, Devon, and is expected to arrive in New York in time for a UN climate change conference on September 23.
Also on board the ship will be Boris Hermann, a 38-year-old German who has sailed it around the world, Greta’s father, Svante Thunnberg, and Pierre Casiraghi, the grandson of Monaco’s late Prince Ranier III and actress Grace Kelly.
The crew will also be joined by Swedish documentary filmmaker Nathan Grossman.
She will sail for two weeks on board the vessel which has no fridge, no heating and no washing facility on the boat.
The only toilet is a blue bucket marked ‘poos here please’.
However, the Swede doesn’t expect to change Donald Trump’s mind on climate change.
She told The Telegraph: ‘If no-one else has succeeded, I’m not that special.
‘I can’t convince everyone, so instead of speaking to me and to the school striking children and teenagers, he should be talking to actual scientists and experts in this area,’ she said.
She added: ‘There’s always going to be people who don’t understand or accept the united science, and I will just ignore them, as I’m only acting and communicating on the science.’
The yacht is said to have cost more than £4m to build and is equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines to generate the electricity needed to power the instruments on board.
