Spurs see remarkable 110 per cent rise in salary costs for injured players
Tottenham Hotspur suffered some high profile injuries during crucial points of the last campaign.
The beginning of 2019 certainly was not kind to Harry Kane, Tottenham were riding high in the Premier League and also active in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League when the striker sustained ligament damage to his ankle late in the top flight loss to Manchester United at Wembley (Guardian).
The injury kept the forward sidelined until for 40 days and suffered another ankle problem during the Champions League quarter final first leg against Manchester City in April that saw him miss the rest of the Premier League campaign, only to re-appear in the final of Europe’s most prestigious cup competition against Liverpool where he performnedwell below par.
Dele Alli also missed a total of 21 matches last season with respective hamstring and high problems to add to Mauricio Pochettino’s woes.
According to the Sports Injury Index 2019 compiled by insurance broker Marsh JLT Specialty, the Spurs squad sustained a total of 61 injuries which was only bettered by Manchesteer United’s 63.
Totteham’s players were missing for a combined 1,652 days which cost the club around £17.9million on paying members of the squad who were unable to take to the field.
“The rise in injury costs has largely been driven by the top six clubs, which account for 54% of these costs. The top six have experienced an average 48-percent increase in salaries paid to injured players since 2016, with Tottenham Hotspur particularly affected, seeing costs rise by 110 percent in the last three years,” stated Marsh JLT Specialty, which also calculated that there has been an 86-percent increase in salaries paid by clubs to injured players since 2012/13.
