America First: New Trump Rule Could Deny Green Cards For Immigrants Who Use Public Benefits

“To protect benefits for American citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient,” President Donald Trump said.

President Trump’s new rule could deny green cards for immigrants who use public benefits.

The White House announced on Monday that the Trump Administration will enforce longstanding immigration law that prohibits immigrants from abusing public benefits.

To be clear, this new rule does not impact humanitarian-based immigration programs such as for refugees or asylum-seekers.

“Today, USCIS, the agency I head as part of the Department of Homeland Security has issued a rule that encourages and ensures self reliance and self sufficiency for those seeking to come to or to stay in the United States,” Acting Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services Ken Cuccinelli said.

“Through the public charge rule, President Trump’s administration is reenforcing the ideals of self-sufficiency and personal responsibility ensuring immigrants are able to support themselves and become successful here in America,” Cuccinelli added.

“An alien who receives public benefits above a certain threshold is known as a “public charge.”” the White House said in a press release.

“Aliens will be barred from entering the United States if they are found likely to become public charges. Aliens in the United States who are found likely to become public charges will also be barred from adjusting their immigration status,” The White House said.

This rule is expected to officially be published on Wednesday and will go into effect in mid-October.
