Chris Bassitt, Matt Olson lead Athletics to series win over White Sox

CHICAGO — The A’s took the series from the White Sox with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon. The A’s move to 67-51 on the season.

Lucas Giolito was a force on the mound for the White Sox, striking out a career-high 13 batters in just six innings of work.

But he made one too many mistakes. The first, a ball low and away to Matt Chapman — his bread and butter lately — that he bopped the other way and nearly cleared the left field if not for Jon Jay’s swatting glove over the yellow bar.

Matt Olson was the only Athletic with previous success against the mighty Giolito, having recorded two hits and two RBI with a home run previously. He took a 1-0 fastball up in the zone for a two-run homer.

That’s all the offense the A’s could find, though, but it was enough.

For all of Giolito’s brilliance, Chris Bassitt came out of the duel with his eighth win. He looked to be at his best against a tough White Sox lineup, incorporating his changeup and cutter nicely yet again with that sinker and four-seamer.

Bassitt dealt seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts with two walks. He’s been stellar since incorporating his changeup more readily into his repertoire on July 13, now boasting a 2.00 ERA over that span.
