Yesterday, millions of gun owners shot no one. Yet, when just a few acted irresponsibly, all owners are condemned amid a call to disarm everyone.
It’s as if we banned box-cutters for everyone after a few people used them to hijack an airplane. Instead, let’s examine what inspires these crimes and focus on causes, not instruments.
We have a crisis inspired by reality TV which informs you that anyone can be famous, paired with a generation that has been overindulged and not held accountable.
This is a recipe for disaster. Let’s take the fame away. Don’t publicize the shooter’s name. Speak instead about the cowardly jerk who ruined people’s lives. Highlight the victims and the cops. Don’t speculate as to motive; just condemn the idiot. Just like jihadists, fame, even in death, is preferable to their anonymity.
