Giants cut Tyler Austin, promote Steven Duggar ahead of series at Coors Field

DENVER — The San Francisco Giants shook up their 25-man roster with a flurry of trades ahead of Wednesday’s 1 p.m. deadline.

Two days later, the roster churn is continuing in Denver as the Giants are adding outfielder Steven Duggar and infielder Scooter Gennett ahead of their three-game series against the Rockies.

The Giants announced Friday that Tyler Austin has been designated for assignment and pitcher Dereck Rodríguez has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento to clear the way for the new additions.

Austin was acquired at the beginning of the season from Minnesota to provide the Giants with a right-handed bat off the bench, but he hit just .187 and struggled significantly over his final two months with the club.

Duggar will join the roster in time to roam the vast outfield at Coors Field where he could be asked to give center fielder Kevin Pillar a day off. Pillar crashed into the fence at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Thursday and suffered a charley horse, but remained in the game until the Giants lost 10-2.

Gennett, acquired Wednesday from the Reds, is expected to make his debut with the Giants on Friday.

President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and manager Bruce Bochy indicated second baseman Joe Panik’s roster spot would be in jeopardy when Gennett joined the club, but the Giants elected to hold onto Panik on Friday.

With Gennett, Panik and Donovan Solano on the roster, the Giants now have three second basemen.

The Giants often carry 12 position players and 13 pitchers for series at the hitter-friendly Coors Field, but with Pillar and shortstop Brandon Crawford (shoulder) banged up following Thursday’s loss to the Phillies, they’ll head into the weekend with 13 position players and 12 pitchers.
