In one historic week, Peruvian softball experienced its best international performance ever and opened the most important sports event so far in the South American nation. On Tuesday 30 July Peru claimed the silver medal at the WBSC U-12 Mixed Softball World Cup, while 24 July was the opener of the Pan American Games Lima 2019 men’s softball competition.
Peru almost stunned host Chinese Taipei, losing 3-2 the final of the U-12 Softball World Cup in a very close game. It was the first-ever softball world cup medal for the South American nation.
The medal obtained in the first-ever U-12 World Cup is in line with the long term development work made by the National Federation in the last years. The Federación Deportiva Peruana de Softbol has organized four U-15 Women’s Softball South American Championship in a row, with the fifth edition slated to be played from 7-15 September.
The Peruvian National Federation was awarded as the Softball National Federation of the Year in 2014 by the WBSC.
Softball excels in Lima 2019
The Men’s Softball competition in Lima 2019 opened on 24 July, the day before the Opening Ceremony of the Games, with great success. In spite of being a non-traditional sport in Peru, the new stadium at Villa Maria del Triunfo has been fully packed during the night games, when Peru is playing.
According to Around the Rings, Lima 2019 spokesperson Carlos Manuel Lazarte said yesterday -Monday 29 July- during a press conference that he attended the men’s softball game between Peru and Venezuela on Sunday and he was pleased with the “positive atmosphere”.
The Women’s competition opens on 4 August, with four of the top five teams in the world battling for the Gold.
The softball competition in Lima includes the two reigning softball world champions (Argentina Men’s National Team, and USA Women’s National Team) and some of the best nations in the world.
The Pan American Games are one of the biggest and most important multi-sports events in the world, with a total of 6,700 athletes from 41 National Olympic Committees competing in 39 sports.
The new stadium, inaugurated in May, will be pivotal for the development in the country, as a long term legacy for the Peruvian softball.
