One newborn died Tuesday and another is recovering at a local hospital after reportedly being abandoned by their mother behind a business in Cordelia.
Just after 4 p.m., Fairfield police responded to a report of a woman behind a business in the 300 block of Pittman Road possibly with two babies that appeared to be newborns. Officers attempted a welfare check to see what was going on.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered two newborns but their mother was nowhere to be found, said Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen.
One of the officers noticed that one of the babies appeared to be in distress and attempted lifesaving efforts before transferring care to the Fire Department, Jacobsen said. That baby was then transported to a local hospital.
Tragically, the other baby had died before officers arrived.
Meanwhile, more officers went in search of the children’s mother and found a woman on Central Place who appeared to have just given birth. She was detained and transported to a local hospital for care.
The investigation is in its preliminary stages, the lieutenant advised, and remains active.
