Van driver distracted by wasp crashes into car and flips it over

A van driver ploughed into another car and flipped it on its roof after getting distracted by a wasp.

The motorist, in his 50s, is thought to have lost control and drifted on to the opposite side of the road after a wasp flew into his window.

He then panicked and careered his white Transit van into the red Nissan, causing it to flip on its roof on a road near Wigan, Greater Manchester.

Luckily the woman in her mid-20s was left with just a grazed knee, in the shock accident which happened on Tuesday.

Cyclist Scott Bennett, 39, was travelling along the road when he saw the woman crawling through her window seconds after it had flipped over.

Scott, a Network Rail worker, said the van driver claimed he had lost control of the vehicle when a wasp had tried to sting him.

He added: ‘I was cycling along the road and I just saw this can swerve across the road. It hit the Nissan, which went flying up into the air.

‘I sped up so that I could help and as I was getting there a young woman was crawling out of the car.

‘I couldn’t believe that she was okay, it was a really bad crash.

‘I made sure everyone was okay and tried to calm people down then called 999.

‘The van driver was saying a wasp had got into his vehicle, which is why he veered into the woman’s path.

‘Apparently that’s what has caused him to lose control and go on to the other side of the road.’

Scott said the van driver appeared visibly shaken up over the incident.

Police, fire and medical personnel attended the scene and no arrests were made, said Greater Manchester Police.

The female driver was taken to hospital but it’s not thought she suffered any serious injuries.
