Zidane offers Bale update after Welshman scores and Asensio is injured
Former Spurs hero Gareth Bale scored for his current side Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly against Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal on Tuesday night.
Bale came off the bench when Madrid were 2-0 down to Arsenal and scored to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute. Marco Asensio soon levelled the score and the game ended 2-2, with Madrid beating Arsenal on penalties.
Unfortunately, Asensio suffered an ACL injury in his left knee soon after equalising for Madrid, leaving Zidane with fewer options for the new season (BBC).
Despite Bale’s contribution, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane said that the situation regarding Bale’s future remains unchanged.
After the game Zidane had this to say (BBC): “He played today, he wanted to and he did a good job.
“He wanted to be with us today; he trained normally and played the match. I make the decisions and he played one half. We’ll have to see what happens. He’s still here with us at this stage.”
This comes a week or so after Zidane revealed Bale was close to leaving the club and that he hoped he departed soon (ESPN).
Recent speculation has suggested that Bale could make a surprise return to Spurs ahead of the new Premier League season, while he has also been linked with a move to China (Telegraph).
Spurs Web Opinion
The Bale situation is an interesting one. Zidane seemingly has no desire to keep Bale at Madrid and yet they are faced with a difficult task in moving him on. His extraordinary wage bill alone presents a problem in moving him on, as its likely no one will be willing to pay it. While I would love to see Bale return to Spurs, I can’t help but feeling it’s extremely unlikely.
