A woman has had her leg partially amputated after she fell between a train and the platform at Gatwick Airport station.
The victim, who has not yet been named, was treated by paramedics after being pulled up from the gap at 9am today.
She was then taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London, where she underwent emergency surgery for a ‘life changing’ leg injury, according to the British Transport Police.
Power to the electrified rails was turned off as rescuers dealt with the incident and airline passengers were delayed for a while.
Police said the fall was believed to have been an accident.
This horrific incident follows growing concerns about the gap between the train and the platform widening at many stations due to the introduction of thousands of new carriages.
Research published by the Rail Safety and Standards Board said there was an increased risk of travellers falling between platforms and trains.
There have been 21 serious accidents between the platform and train since 2005, most in the past five years, The Times reported earlier this month.
Platforms named by passengers as having particularly large gaps include some of those at Clapham Junction and East Croydon in south London, Bristol Temple Meads, Worcester Foregate Street, Whitehaven, Epsom and Dorchester.
