Bisping: ‘I think the biggest threat to Jon Jones right now is Johnny Walker’
Michael Bisping believes Johnny Walker could pose all kinds of problems to Jon Jones.
Jon Jones had difficulty in dealing with Thiago Santos’ unorthodox style at UFC 239, which has led many to question how the reigning light heavyweight champion would fare against the master of unorthodoxy himself, Johnny Walker.
Walker, 27, burst on to the UFC circuit in 2018 and has won three straight fights in the promotion, finishing all of his opponents in spectacular fashion and quickly developing a reputation as one of the most exciting fighters in the light heavyweight division.
Walker has been so impressive in the Octagon that former UFC middleweight champion turned commentator, podcast host and MMA analyst Michael Bisping believes the Brazilian is currently the biggest threat to Jon Jones.
“I think the biggest threat right now to Jon Jones is Johnny Walker,” Bisping said on a recent edition of Believe You Me, per Fernando Quiles Jr. of MMA News. “I think Johnny Walker gives him a lot of problems, but I understand it from Jones’ perspective. He’s still not well-known enough to the average MMA fan. He’s had a big splash, he’s had a few big wins in very, very quick time. And in fact, he’s injured right now because he injured himself with his post-fight celebration. That’s the most damage he takes in his fights, in his own f*cking celebrations.”
With that said, ‘The Count’ agrees with ‘Bone’s’ sentiments about Walker needing a couple more wins under his belt before he’s ready to challenge for the light heavyweight title.
“But he’s not there yet. He needs another win or two. For one I think it would be rushing Johnny Walker and potentially bringing him on a little too far, too soon. And Jones is right. Another couple more wins, put him in a co-main event, even a Fight Night main event against a big name and then all of a sudden you’ve got a real star on your hands. And then that makes the pay-per-view bigger for everybody involved. So, I agree with Jones.”
Walker dislocated his shoulder during his UFC 235 post-fight celebration and is expected to be out of action for the foreseeable future.
