A gas station clerk who told a group of Latina women to "go back " to their country and questioned their citizenship has been fired.

In a video that went viral on Facebook, the employee of Bucky's Express shop in Naperville, Illinois, outside Chicago, argued with women over their right to be in the United States.

He can be heard in the video saying, "I'm an American" and asking, "Are you a citizen?"

"Yes. What is your problem," one of the women replied. The clerk responded: "Don't you know the rules? They need to go back to their country. It's illegal."

When one of the women said she would call the police, the man said, "ICE will come," referencing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Carolina Buitron, who recorded the exchange, told NBC Chicago that she and her family, some of whom were visiting from Mexico, were told to leave the gas station after the clerk heard them speaking Spanish.

"He started asking about my cousins, if they were illegal, family or friends, are they adopted," she told the station.

While police have not publicly identified the employee, he was named by Buzzfeed News as Joseph Philip Daniel.

Bucky's Convenience Stores confirmed on Thursday that an employee had been fired, calling his behavior "inappropriate."

"He is no longer employed by us," the company said in the statement. "We do not tolerate any behavior that is insensitive to our valued customers. Bucky's Convenience Stores is a very diverse and inclusive company that believes in treating all individuals with the utmost respect."

Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico said in a Facebook post that Naperville Police are investigating the incident.

"Let me be abundantly clear: hate has no home here in Naperville. Quite frankly, this type of behavior has no place in society at large," he said.
