England’s victorious cricket team paid a visit to Theresa May in Downing Street to celebrate their World Cup win.
Captain Eoin Morgan led his players to meet the Prime Minister after cheers erupted from Whitehall.
The Prime Minister, a self professed cricket fan who attended the final at Lord’s, couldn’t contain her joy as she laughed with players.
As she greeted the team outside Number 10, she was shown the trophy, which England won for the first time after a heart-stopping showdown against New Zealand.
Mrs May shook hands with the squad, including star bowler Jofra Archer and all-rounder Ben Stokes, posed for photos with the triumphant team and lifted the cup with the help of Morgan.
Spinner Adil Rashid helped the pair prop up the trophy at one point and urged them to lift it higher before entering Number 10.
England became world champions after a very close-run super over at Lord’s yesterday evening.
Fans could not contain their delight as they partied in the streets following the historic win.
Player Jonny Bairstow previously described the nature of the result as timeless.
He said: ‘It was ridiculous, genuinely ridiculous. Wow.
‘There’s never going to be a game like that ever in history ever again.’
Test captain Joe Root added: ‘What a day yesterday was. Probably the best game of all time.’
Mrs May has made no secret of her love of cricket, and was praised by her childhood hero Geoffrey Boycott during a visit to India last year.
She was brought up listening to Test cricket on the radio with her father, and has previously said: ‘I have been a Geoff Boycott fan all my life.
‘It was just that he kind of solidly got on with what he was doing.’
The lads were much more well behaved than the the 2005 team who were so sozzled they worse sunglasses to hide their eyes as they met former Prime Minister Tony Blair and his family.
Batting hero Kevin Pietersen admitted it was all a blur, saying: ‘I don’t remember much of it, to be honest. I don’t even remember shaking the Prime Minister’s hand.’
