When are the new £20 and £50 notes coming out?
The Bank of England has just revealed the new design for its £50 note.
It will feature Alan Turing, a mathematician who helped crack the Enigma code during World War II and was also a computer pioneer.
Turing is also famous for having been persecuted after the war, in 1952, because he was homosexual. He died two years later, and it was concluded that the cause was suicide by cyanide poisioning.
The design was announced by the governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, earlier today (15 July) at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester.
‘Alan Turing was an outstanding mathematician whose work has had an enormous impact on how we live today,’ said Carney.
‘As the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as a war hero, Alan Turing’s contributions were far ranging and path breaking.
‘Turing is a giant on whose shoulders so many now stand.’
When are the new £20 and £50 notes coming out?
Alongside the £50 note there will also be a new £20 note coming out soon, with both being made from polymer.
The £20 design features a portrait of J.M.W Turner, also known as William Turner, a famous English painter who died in 1851.
The Turner £20 note will be introduced next year, while the old £20 note will be gradually removed from the market.
Swapping over to the new money will take time – there are currently 344 million of the old £50 notes still around, according to statistics by the Bank of England.
The £50 note with Turing’s face on it is set to go into circulation at some point in 2021.
