Lee Cattermole nears Steve Bruce reunion at Sheff Wed after Sunderland deal is terminated
LEE CATTERMOLE is closing in on a move to Sheffield Wednesday after terminating his contract with Sunderland.
The tough-tackling midfielder, 31, left the Stadium of Light following a ten-year stint that ended in Wembley promotion heartache.
A statement from the League One club, who are desperate to trim their wage bill, confirmed his departure on Monday.
It read: “We can confirm that Lee Cattermole has left the club with immediate effect.
“Lee has been a great servant for SAFC and we wish to place on record our thanks for his dedication for the past 10 years and we wish him the very best in the future.”
Cattermole is now expected to move back to the Championship for a reunion with his ex-Wigan and Black Cats boss Steve Bruce at the Owls.
He said: “Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge.
“The football club, over my 10 years, has had some fantastic managers, staff and players and I have been lucky to be part of that.
