Mnuchin said the sanctions target the office of Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The US official stressed that Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will also be targeted with sanctions later this week. He added that the sanctions will also be imposed on eight senior commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps. Prior to Trump's order, Russia slammed the new sanctions as illegal saying it will take steps, along with its partners, to counter them. The sanctions come after Iran downed an American spy drone last week which had violated its airspace.
