Schweinsteiger earned MLS All-Star honors for the second time in his career.
Fire defender Bastian Schweinsteiger landed a spot on the roster for the 2019 MLS All-Star Game. It’s the second time he’s earned the honor after being team captain for the MLS squad in 2017.
The MLS All-Star Game follows a different format from most similar events in that the league’s top players team up to play together against one of the world’s top professional clubs. This year, the MLS All-Stars will take on 10-time La Liga champion Atletico Madrid at Exploria Stadium in Orlando on July 31.
Schweinsteiger was one of several selections for the roster made by coach James O’Connor, who got to handpick a host of players for the squad. Others earned their spots through a fan vote or selection by league commissioner Don Garber.
No other members of the Fire made the team, which is an upgrade from their zero All-Stars in 2018 but a step back from the four players (Schweinsteiger, Dax McCarty, Nemanja Nikolic, Johan Kappelhof) sent to the 2017 game.
This season, Schweinsteiger has recorded two assists and 10 shots in 16 games.
