Report: Spurs receive boost in pursuit of 21-year-old winger
Tottenham Hotspur may be looking to add some youth to their wings this summer, as they are reportedly interested in bringing in PSV forward Steven Bergwijn (Voetbal International).
The 21-year-old was a major driving force behind PSV’s campaign last season, scoring 15 and setting up 13 from the wing.
Spurs will know all about the player too, as they faced off against PSV twice in the Champions League group stages.
In fact, it was PSV taking a point off Inter Milan on the final group stage game week that allowed Spurs to progress and eventually make the Champions League final.
PSV manager, Mark van Bommel, will obviously not want to lose one of his prized assets, but he has made it abundantly clear that he wants nothing less than to see Bergwijn rejoin Ajax.
The winger was in the Ajax youth ranks as a child before moving to PSV back in 2011.
PSV and van Bommel’s clear determination not to sell to their bitter rivals may just hand Spurs an advantage in securing his signature themselves this summer.
Van Bommel said (Voetbal Primeur): “We do not want to sell him to Ajax. Look, if Ajax comes, and they pay the right price, then he will no doubt leave.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
With Son and Moura, along with the potential arrivals of Clarke and Sessegnon, I don’t think this is a position that Spurs need to invest in. Bergwijn could be a star for the future, but the timing is not quite right for Tottenham, in my opinion.
