PINATUBO managed to win well at Epsom last time despite hating the track.
He can follow up that success by taking the Chesham Stakes (2.30). James Doyle didn’t have to get too busy on board as he finished off the 6f trip really strongly.
That makes you think that stepping up to 7f on a more conventional track should bring plenty of improvement.
The Aidan O’Brien hotpot Lope Y Fernandez was impressive when scoring on debut at The Curragh and is a worthy opponent. This is a tougher contest though.
It could be a good day for the boys in blue because they have a big chance with SPACE BLUES in the Jersey Stakes (3.05).
The son of Dubawi’s form has taken a massive leap forward with a big handicap win followed by a bloodless success in the Listed Surrey Stakes at Epsom last month.
He’s won on fast and soft ground so it doesn’t really matter what the weather does and he gives the impression that there’s a lot more to come.
A good few of his rivals look better over a mile like Happy Power who scored on the Knavesmire last time and Angel’s Hideaway who was a good fourth in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
One who should relish this trip is So Perfect who finished strongly when winning a Naas Group 3 at 6f latest. She had plenty in hand and is another who goes in any conditions.
LAH TI DAR looks a big price in the Hardwicke Stakes (3.40). Many have written her off thanks to a below par run in the Coronation Cup at Epsom last time out.
That was coming just two weeks after a big effort to win a York Group 2 on comeback where she looked as good as ever despite 1m2f being on the short side.
She was a close-up third at Group 1 level here last season, again after running a mighty race when second in the St Leger. She has few miles on the clock for a four-year-old and her best form would see her go very close.
Masar is the most interesting runner in the race. We haven’t seen him since winning the Derby last year thanks to him suffering an injury soon afterwards. It’s telling that he wasn’t sent off to stud so Godolphin clearly believe he can come back to his best.
This is a tough assignment after 385 days off but we know he has bags of quality. Defoe landed a deserved Group 1 win at Epsom last time when showing real heart to go through a gap. He won’t be a pushover but needs to peak again.
We cashed in on BLUE POINT winning the King’s Stand on day one and he can repeat the feat in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (4.20).
He couldn’t have been much more impressive in seeing off Battaash by more than a length. It could be asking a lot to try and produce that form again so soon but trainer Charlie Appleby is adamant he can do it — and who are we to argue?
Follow the Van in the Wokingham (5.00). VANBRUGH had plenty of decent form in France for Andre Fabre and has shown up well since moving across the Channel to join Charlie Hills.
He won easily in minor company at Thirsk before running well in a Haydock Listed race last time out. He showed lots of pace there but he was put in front too far from home and was just run out of it in the closing stages.
This drop back in distance looks a wise move and he is open to improvement after just a couple of outings in the UK. Soldier’s Minute was impressive in beating a big field at York by three lengths last time and has a decent draw today.
