U.S. troops were secretly participating in U.S. atomic bomb tests and subsequent cleanup operations during World War II and later in the Pacific Ocean, the Nevada desert, New Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Servicemembers took the human brunt of ionizing radiation that contaminated nearby lands, water and communities.
