STRUGGLING splitter party Change UK is being forced to change its name yet again after it was threatened with legal action.
The beleaguered Brexit-basher group said this afternoon they would now be known as ‘The Independent Group for Change’ after Change.org said it would sue their MPs individually unless they budged.
It comes after a series of gaffes by the crisis-hit party, and several other name changes in their three short months of existence.
The Independent Group for Change has also been known as Change UK, The Independent Group, For Change Now, Vote For Change. and TIG.
In a statement released today they said: “We are now legally obliged to make a formal application to the Electoral Commission, to amend our name by 15th June, so today we are applying to register ourselves as ‘The Independent Group for Change’ and will await the Electoral Commission’s decision.”
Just weeks ago the party – which was originally made of ex-Tory and Labour MPs – split in two after the party’s dire European election performance.
It lost half its MPs including interim leader Heidi Allen, just 106 days after its launch.
The group has been dogged by in-fighting and arguments over tactics since it was set up back in March, sending shockwaves through Westminster.
But for weeks they were deeply divided over whether to work with the Liberal Democrats in an alliance to try and force through a second referendum.
Ex-Tory MP Anna Soubry and former Labour MP Chris Leslie said they would keep fighting.
Rumours have been rife that some of the latest splitters could join their third party in as many months and join the Liberal Democrats.
In March a group of Labour MPs left over Jeremy Corbyn and the party’s failure to tackle anti-Semitism, and three Tories quit to fight for a second referendum.
But the party have made a series of huge errors and ended up polling just 3.4 per cent in the European elections and not getting a single MEP elected.
