Police told to stop posting so many cute puppy pics and get back to work

A police force has apparently been spending too much time and money posting cute animal pictures.

A firm hired to audit New Zealand Police’s social media found only 8% of posts were about tackling crime.

A lot of the time they were focusing on uploading images of dogs.

Audit firm Socialites told officers they may wish to change focus during a presentation.

Sadly this may mean less dog images are posted during the weekly ‘Friday floof’ hashtag.

Socialites agreed the force had come across as ‘human and authentic’ through the use of humour online, according to the Otago Daily Times which obtained the presentation slides.

In total the force spent $171,676 on promoting posts on Facebook last year, with a significant part of this going towards the animal posts.

The force has defended its dog social media posts.

New Zealand Police marketing manager Paul Halford said they tried to engage with people through the internet.

He told Daily Mail Australia: ‘There is an important role for social media for New Zealand Police so our communities can remain informed and updated about what we are doing.’
