Democracy Day: Punish those who annulled June 12 - Group tells Buhari

- The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria commended President Buhari for recognising June 12 as Democracy Day

- The PFN, however, argued that the president has to punish those behind the annulment of the 1993 election for the healing process to complex

- The group also called on Nigerians to embrace the federal government’s healing gesture of recognising June 12 as Democracy Day

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) on Thursday, June 13, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for taking the bold steps to correct the injustice of the annulment of the 1993 election which was adjudged the most credible election in the nation’s history.

The PFN hailed President Buhari recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s democracy day and immortalizing the acclaimed winner of the 1993 elections, late Chief MKO Abiola, Vanguard reports.

PFN president, Reverend Felix Omobude, however, argued that the healing process will only be complete if the government can sum up the courage to bring all those who participated in the annulment to justice.

Omobude called on Nigerians to embrace the federal government’s healing gesture of recognising June 12 as Democracy Day and work in unity to collectively protect the nation’s democracy and its institutions for the growth and development of all sectors of the country.

Recall that President Buhari had stated in his democracy day speech that “as part of the process of healing and reconciliation, I approved the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day and invested the late Chief MKO. Abiola and Babagana Kingibe with National Honours, as I did with the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. The purpose was to partially atone for the previous damage done in annulling the presidential elections of that year.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams said that with the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day, the late MKO Abiola will continue to linger on in the minds of Nigeria and Nigerians.

The respected Yoruba leader made this known on Wednesday in Ogba, Lagos, at the annual June 12 commemoration, organized by the Oodua Peoples Congress.

Adams, in his remarks, lauded President Buhari for recognizing the efforts of late Abiola and several other heroes and heroines who paid the Supreme price, saying the recognition is indeed a reward for Nigeria's democrats.
