Off-road driving, according to Ford
FORD said that as off-road driving becomes more popular, driver-assist technologies — like those found in the Ford Everest — have also increasingly provided exciting aids to make journeys off-pavement more fun and comfortable. Ford vehicle integration attributes supervisor Richard Woolley, who has driven an Everest on some of Tasmania’s and Australia’s challenging terrains, shares here some off-road driving advices:
- Before leaving for a trip, ensure the vehicle has a full tank of fuel and that you have either a map or GPS navigation. Built-in navigation such as SYNC 3 in the Everest is a great tool for planning routes ahead of time.
- Muddy tracks can be a challenge as the road becomes slippery over time, no thanks to other vehicles and rain that created them. The Everest’s Terrain Management System’s (TMS) mud mode is designed to keep engine revs low for greater control. Enhanced ABS and torque control also minimize wheel slip.
- Remaining in control at a slow and steady pace is the best way through extremely rocky terrain. TMS has a rock mode, which maintains first gear in 4×4 setting. This keeps the rpm at optimum engine torque.
- Ascending a steep hill can be tricky so, if it’s safe to do so, get out of the vehicle and walk the track to find where the ruts and rocks may be. If stopped on a gradient, the Everest’s Hill Launch Assist allows the driver to pause and reassess the path.
- When going down a hill be careful not to lock the wheels because this will make the vehicle slide uncontrollably. Engage Hill Descent Control and the brake system will take the vehicle downhill at a steady pace.
- The TMS’s sand mode offers an aggressive torque transfer and increased accelerator sensitivity, combining to maintain momentum needed to drive through sand.
- After driving, check the vehicle for debris or damage, particularly the tires. If you have been driving along the beach or rivers, wash the vehicle thoroughly to avoid corrosion developing over time.
