Many traits are polygenic, affected by multiple genetic variants throughout the genome. Selection acting on these traits involves co–ordinated allele–frequency changes at these underlying variants, and this process has been extensively studied in random–mating populations. Yet many species self–fertilise to some degree, which incurs changes to genetic diversity, recombination and genome segregation. These factors cumulatively influence how polygenic selection is realised in nature. Читать дальше...

A new study characterizes and improves a novel small Cas12a variant before adapting it for in vivo genome editing by delivery via adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors, showcasing the potential of small CRISPR systems and their compatibility with viral vectors. Adopting Cas12a nucleases for AAV-based gene therapy has been difficult due to their large size. A new study in PLOS Biology characterizes and engineers a new Cas12a nuclease variant that is compatible for... Читать дальше...

This study examines the usability of communication-assistive applications for hearing-impaired users, with a focus on enhancing user experience and promoting social inclusion. Although such applications have been developed and evaluated previously, interface designs that consider the intimacy needs of hearing-impaired users remain under-explored. We performed a comprehensive usability evaluation employing a mixed-method approach... Читать дальше...

This experimental study investigates the influence of indoor plants on three aspects of air quality in office spaces: relative humidity, indoor air temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. Employing a Latin square design, we rotated three different treatments across three offices over six time periods. These treatments included a control (no plants), a low-volume treatment (five plants), and a high-volume treatment (eighteen plants) of Nephrolepis exaltata (Boston fern). Читать дальше...

BackgroundDespite progress in access to family planning services in many sub-Saharan African countries in recent decades, advances in effective early postpartum contraceptive adoption remain low, and the unmet need for early postpartum contraceptives is high. In Ethiopia, early postpartum modern contraceptive method uptake is still unacceptably low. The barriers/challenges have not yet been sufficiently explored. A deep and... Читать дальше...
