You can’t dip your heart in an anesthetic. You can’t flip off your feelings like a switch. You can’t be the emotionless android that you wish you were.
From the river to the sea, human flourishing will only be advanced through a nuanced and empathetic attitude to both sides. Radical stances that dehumanize one side, turning its babies into colonizers and marking them as legitimate targets for attack, do not advance freedom or justice. Quite the opposite.

This study compares the outcomes of kidney transplant recipients who received kidneys from deceased donors who underwent dialysis prior to kidney donation vs recipients of kidneys from deceased donors who did not undergo dialysis.
Kidney transplant is the preferred treatment for the majority of patients with end-stage kidney disease. Its superiority over dialysis, which is the default long-term treatment in the US and in much of the world, is remarkably consistent across multiple recipient and donor subgroups. Only when the most marginal kidneys are given to the most marginal candidates or when marginal kidneys are given to younger, healthier recipients do transplant outcomes fail to surpass the outcomes of those remaining on dialysis. In Reply We thank Drs LaFleur and Miranker for their review of our Research Letter and for their interest in the field of migratory drowning. We strongly support additional scientific investigation in this emerging field, and we applaud LaFleur and Miranker for their attention to this important issue.
In Reply We thank Dr Montalva and colleagues for their comments regarding apnea occurrence and anesthetic approach for inguinal hernia repair in response to our multicenter randomized clinical trial examining the timing of hernia repair in preterm infants. We enrolled smaller and more immature infants than most available studies, including the General Anesthesia compared to Spinal anesthesia (GAS) study. The surgical and anesthetic methods were used at the discretion of the clinicians and the finding... Читать дальше...
To the Editor The Research Letter by Ms Lussier and Dr Lindholm quantified the number of drowning deaths of undocumented migrants in Southern California (Pacific Ocean, canals, and other water bodies) and Texas (Rio Grande River). During the periods assessed (2016-2019 and 2020-2023), the height of the border wall was increased in California but not in Texas. The authors reported that aquatic deaths increased in California but not in Texas and suggest that the difficulty in traversing the new US-Mexico... Читать дальше...
To the Editor We read with great interest the recent article by Dr Blakely and colleagues reporting the results of their randomized clinical trial on the timing of inguinal hernia repair in preterm infants. Delaying hernia repair until after hospital discharge and when the infants were older than 55 weeks’ postmenstrual age resulted in fewer serious adverse events compared with performing an early hernia repair before discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit. As a result, the authors advocate... Читать дальше...
