Ebonyi council chairmen reject local govt autonomy, say they want joint control

- The local government chairmen and ward councilors have rejected the position of NFIU on financial autonomy

- The chairmen made their position in a 10-point resolution they presented to the state House of Assembly

- The gassroot leaders said they believe their position will bring about the efficient administration of the local government areas

The 13 local government chairmen and ward councilors in Ebonyi state has rejected the position of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) on local government finances.

The rejection by the chairmen was contained in a 10-point resolution signed by the legislative leaders of the local government and has been presented to the state House of Assembly for confirmation, Leadership reports.

The chairmen who appeared at the House during its plenary session said their position is to engender efficient administration the grassroot areas.

The local leaders said that the central payment of salaries and pensions must be maintained and that jointed state and local government project as stipulated in the amendment law No 007 of 2015 should be also be upheld.

Other things in the 10-poinnt resolution include the funding of the Ebonyi State University and the 64 development centres of the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state endorsed Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila as speaker of the House of Representatives in the coming 9th Assembly.

Governor Umahi who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party received the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker at the government house in Abakaliki on Tuesday, May 21. Gbajabiamila was accompanied by some lawmakers, including Abdulmumin Jibrin, spokesman of his campaign to solicit the support of Umahi.

Umahi urged the lawmaker to carry everyone along in spite of party differences.

He said: “This visit is the first of its kind and that’s the way it should be; we should deemphasise party affiliation because it is capable of denying us the development we needed as we continue to define everything along that line.

“That is why we should pursue whatever that can tie us together. When you get there, let’s de-emphasis party affiliation, let’s work for the country because no section can do it alone, we need one another for the survival of this country.”
