E-cigarette use among US adults remains high, particularly among younger people, according to data from about 415 000 participants in the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey.
A new analysis of genomic changes suggests that the mpox virus has been circulating in humans since 2016—several years before the international mpox epidemic began in 2022. Many of the changes to the virus’ genome were related to antiviral enzymes known as APOBEC3 deaminases.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently announced new lung cancer screening guidelines, updating its 2013 recommendations. Recent studies, including an analysis of the risk-benefit ratios of screening, supported the updated recommendations, according to an ACS statement.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels have declined since 1999, according to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from about 24 000 US participants. The findings were published in JAMA Cardiology.
An investigational messenger RNA (mRNA)–based vaccine designed to protect against both influenza and COVID-19 induced virus-specific immune responses in people who received it, manufacturers Pfizer and BioNTech announced in a press release.
Several types of human insulin can be stored unopened at temperatures of 25 °C (77 °F) for up to 6 months and at 37 °C (98.6 °F) for up to 2 months without losing a clinically relevant amount of potency, according to an analysis of 17 studies as well as additional previously unreleased information from the pharmaceutical companies BIOTON, Eli Lilly and Company, and Novo Nordisk. Typically, health authorities and manufacturers recommend refrigerating unopened insulin vials and then storing them at room temperature for up to 45 days once opened.
Clinicians have reported record levels of burnout in recent years, driven by a combination of long hours, a high burden of administrative work, and exposure to workplace violence, among other factors.
This article provides an extension of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials 2010 checklist for the reporting of factorial trials.

This randomized clinical trial evaluates whether early adenotonsillectomy, compared with watchful waiting and supportive care, improves neurodevelopmental, behavioral, health, and polysomnographic outcomes in US children with mild sleep-disordered breathing.
This prospective, nonrandomized clinical trial assesses neonatal outcomes after serial amnioinfusions initiated before 26 weeks’ gestation to mitigate lethal pulmonary hypoplasia in pregnancies complicated by bilateral renal agenesis.
This randomized clinical trial evaluates whether sintilimab plus chemotherapy vs placebo plus chemotherapy improved overall survival in patients in China with unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent, or metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma.
In Reply We thank Drs Mathew and Feldmann for their comments on the results of ACTIV-1. We agree that mortality is a very important clinical outcome, but designing a trial such as ACTIV-1 to have sufficient power to detect an effect on mortality was challenging in June 2020, when data on clinical outcomes of severe COVID-19 were in flux. Indeed, the design of ACTIV-1 was heavily influenced by the results of ACTT-1, the initial placebo-controlled trial of remdesivir, which showed evidence of improved time to recovery but not improved mortality.
In Reply Our comprehensive Review of cervical cancer screening describes the HPV natural history underlying cervical cancer and further describes how national guidelines use this knowledge to improve care for patients by focusing on screening, diagnostic, and treatment services in higher-risk patients while decreasing testing and invasive procedures in lower-risk patients. The purpose of the article was to educate clinicians on the basic science underlying evidence-based clinical management as well as review current guidelines. Читать дальше...
To the Editor We have several comments about the recent randomized clinical trial (ACTIV-1) that investigated the effect of abatacept, cenicriviroc, or infliximab on COVID-19 pneumonia.
To the Editor A recent Review recommended human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as the primary screening test for cervical cancer. However, the authors neglected to explore the consequences of endorsing HPV primary screening over cotesting, which includes cytological evaluation. The authors did not discuss the importance of HPV-negative neoplasms. These cases include cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or worse (CIN3+) lesions (false-negative results as well as HPV subtypes not included in commonly... Читать дальше...
Bilateral renal agenesis is historically considered to be universally fatal, due to pulmonary hypoplasia resulting from failure to maintain adequate amniotic fluid from fetal urine production in the first half of pregnancy. This fundamental dictum from perinatal-neonatal medicine has been challenged by the RAFT trial in this issue of JAMA. The authors performed a multicenter nonrandomized clinical trial of pregnancies complicated by bilateral renal agenesis and anhydramnios due to fetal anuria to... Читать дальше...
Habitual snoring and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are remarkably common conditions in children. Poor sleep has a significant effect on the neurobehavior and quality of life (QOL) of the child and therefore on the parent-child dyad, which exceeds the effect of a prevalent and treatable disease. When surgery is considered as treatment, the surgeon and family balance the potential benefit to the child, associated morbidity, related financial burden, and the cost-effectiveness of surgery compared with medical management or watchful waiting. Applying good data management and FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) in research projects can help disentangle knowledge discovery, study result reproducibility, and data reuse in future studies. Based on the concepts of the original FAIR principles for research data, FAIR principles for research software were recently proposed. FAIR Digital Objects enable discovery and reuse of Research Objects, including computational workflows for both humans and machines. Читать дальше...
