Filthy beachgoers leave 10 tons of trash behind after weekend-long party

A group of filthy beachgoers left behind ten tons of trash following a Memorial Day weekend event.

Clean up crews on Chic’s Beach in Virginia were astonished Monday morning when they discovered the sand littered with bottles, towels, pieces of clothing, tents, empty alcoholic beverage containers, and garbage of all sorts.

The debris was the aftermath of Floatopia, an annual beach party that celebrates the official start of summer.

Michael Berlucchi, a local politician, posted a photo of the junk-covered stretch of sand fl, sparking outrage among residents who live near the beach.

Berlucchi wrote: ‘I was disappointed to wake up this morning and see images of trash all over our beautiful Chesapeake Bay beach after Sunday’s festivities. We can do better than this! Let’s work together to keep our City beautiful and clean.’

On average, a typical weekend at Chic’s Beach sees one ton of trash left over, WAVY reported, althoug this weekend saw ten times that amount.

City cleanup crews arrived at the beach early Monday morning to dispose of the mess and were reportedly joined by some of the party’s organizers.

Chris Kane, a resident the beach, said: ‘First thing this morning there’s volunteers…one of the head guys who puts on the party was out here at 5:30 this morning gathering garbage.’

In the wake of the weekend-long desecration of the beach, the city released a statement saying it was ‘disappointed’ at the condition it was left in.

The statement continued to say: ‘However, thanks to the swift and thorough work of our Beach Operations crew, the beach is once again clean, and more than 10 tons of trash and debris has been cleared away. Our sincere thanks goes out to those citizens who helped pitch in to clean up as well.’

Drew Lankford, a spokesman for the City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department, said that city workers and volunteers miraculously got all the garbage picked up in under three hours.

He said a messy beach may discourage tourists from coming to Virginia Beach, which brings in $2.45 billion each year from approximately 10.1 million overnight guests, according to Visit Virginia Beach. 

Lankford said: ‘First impressions do a lot for tourism. We get letters a lot from people saying they’re just amazed at how the place looks when they get here, and we also know that people, if they see something they don’t like, there’s a good chance they’re not coming back.’
