Lingard: United’s history is ingrained in me

On Sunday, Manchester United’s legendary team from 1998-99 took on Bayern Munich legends in a charity game to celebrate our Treble win from 20 years ago.

Both Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard were present for the game, with the latter receiving plenty of stick on social media. It’s hard to understand why his suit or glasses managed to offend so many people, but they did. Rashford also got roped in to getting criticism from our fans too, leading both to post a cryptic post on Instagram, reading ‘0.012%’.

Of the 1.5m players who are playing organised youth football in England at any one time will make it as a professional in the Premier League. There’s only a 0.012% success rate of making it as a professional in this league.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Rashford discussed the impact that 99 had on the club and players coming up through the academy.

Of course, it is part of growing up at a club like United. They make sure that you understand the history of the club and you feel part of it, even though you weren’t there. Moments like what happened in 99 last a lifetime.

Obviously with the things Ole has done for United, he knows the club inside and out. For him to pass on that information to us now is brilliant.

Ole understands the club, he understands where the club is coming from and I think next season he can really put an identity down on the team.

Lingard echoed these sentiments, claiming that the history of the club is drilled in to the players as they make their way up the ranks as youth players.

It was ingrained in us from a young age to really know the history of Man United, the trophies that have been won and especially the Treble. Coming through the ranks, we’ve always been familiar with the history of the club.
