Apple just released a new iPod Touch and people really aren’t sure about it

Apple has announced the surprise release of a new iPod Touch that’s the cheapest way to get a device running the iOS operating system.

But the gadget has sparked a furious social media debate about whether it’s worth buying a device that’s essentially a ‘phoneless iPhone’.

The first iPod was released in 2001, with the touch screen version going on sale a few years later in 2007.

The new Touch costs £199 and comes with the A10 Fusion Chip which first appeared in the iPhone 7 (which can still be bought new for £449 on the Apple website).

At half the cost of the cheapest iPhone model, it’s the most affordable iOS device by far and has a lot of the same capabilities as a fully-fledged Apple phone, although it lacks the ability to make calls or send messages without a wifi connection.

Apple hailed the Touch as a great device for music lovers as well as gamers. It’s the first iPod to feature augmented reality (AR) technology and Group FaceTime.

But on Twitter, tech fans questioned whether the device was worth it when a smartphone can be picked up for pretty much the same price.

‘Why even make an updated iPod Touch?’ one woman asked.

‘With most people having either older iPhones that can do the same thing or use an iPad, it seems kinda pointless.’

‘iPod touch is the most useless thing ever invented it’s literally an iPhone minus the phone like why?’ another person raged.

In practice, the iPod is likely to appeal to people who want a cheaper device that does a few tasks well, such as playing music or making Facetime calls.

It’s also good for kids because it’s cheap and doesn’t allow youngsters to run up huge phone bills.

I gotta ask, why is Apple even making an IPod touch? Every 8 year old and their parents already have iPhones or ipads? I just think it's kinda pointless.

I mean why buy a $300 iPod touch when you can buy a cheap android phone for like $50 and use different apps to transfer your iTunes songs from iTunes to the android phone? lol

‘The ultra-thin and lightweight design of iPod touch has always made it ideal for enjoying games, music and so much more wherever you go.’

The new iPod touch costs £199 for the 32GB model, £299 for the 128GB model and £399 for the 256GB model.

It’s available in six finishes: space gray, white, gold, blue, pink and (PRODUCT)RED.
