Pochettino looks back on his five years in charge of Spurs – ahead of the CL final

Mauricio Pochettino signed his first Tottenham contract five years ago to this day, although he has since put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the club until 2023 (Guardian).

In his five years in charge of the club, Pochettino has taken Spurs from a team on the fringes of top European football to a consistent Champions League qualifier.

This season, he has gone one step further and turned Tottenham into a side that can compete, and potentially win, a Champions League trophy.

And all of this without spending a single penny on transfers in the past 16 months, it is truly incredible what the Argentine is achieving.

Spurs are now just five days away from their first ever Champions League final, as they are set to face Liverpool in Madrid on June 1 at 20:00.

In his pre-match press conference, Pochettino looked back on his five years so far at Spurs with a smile on his face.

He said (Football London): “I am enjoying it a lot. I was thinking today it was my best period here, today I signed a contract five years ago and this period is amazing for us. The last two weeks we worked so hard but we are enjoying it a lot, that preparation. I think we have ahead one of the best games you can play. I think the World Cup final and the final of the Champions League are the two most important games you can play. It is a privilege to play in the Champions League final on Saturday and we are so lucky to have three weeks to prepare because we are enjoying every single day.

“I think when you look back all that transformation from the club, I think it was one of the areas to attack and improve. When you look back the amazing improvement of the club, from facilities and the mentality and the results to be here in the Champions League final. It is a massive, massive achievement for this club, working and developing a project that is completely different to other clubs who can achieve to be in a Champions League final.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Tottenham need to prioritise keeping this man at the club above all else. He may still have four years left on his current deal, but that should not stop Spurs offering him a new bumper contract this summer. Give him increased wages and transfer money to spend. Let him take this club to the next level, because he clearly has the ability to do so.
