Simon Pagenaud edged Alexander Rossi to win the Indy 500 in a thrilling finish

Simon Pagenaud won the entire month of May, capping of a phenomenal several weeks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a victory in the 103rd Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

The No. 22 Team Penske Chevrolet driver won the IndyCar Grand Prix on the Indy road course earlier this month, he won the pole for the Indy 500 last weekend and now, he’s won The Greatest Spectacle in Racing in absolutely dominant fashion.

After starting out front, Pagenaud led more than half of the 200 laps at the Brickyard before holding off an angry, hard-charging Alexander Rossi to win by just 0.2086 seconds.

It was a thrilling finishing to the race as Pagenaud and Rossi traded the lead in the final dozen laps following a restart after a crash halted the race for almost 20 minutes with a red flag. Their battle provided a thrilling finish to the race, while 2017 Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato chasing them and ultimately finishing third.

Rossi had the lead on the restart with 13 laps left, but Pagenaud quickly jumped out front. Rossi stole it back with 12 to go, but Pagenaud answered with 11 remaining.

With five laps to go, Pagenaud had the lead, and with three left, Rossi took it away again and took off. It looked like the 27-year-old driver, who won the Indy 500 in 2016, would be able to hang on.

But with about one and a quarter lap to go, Pagenaud stormed back for the win.

And the 35-year-old French driver’s phenomenal month follows a devastating 2018 where he didn’t win a single race. That changed in the IMS road course a few weeks ago, and now he’s an Indy 500 champ.

After Will Power won the Indy 500 last year, as well as the IndyCar Grand Prix, so this is the second straight year a Team Penske driver has swept the month of May.

Behind Pagenaud, Rossi and Sato, Team Penske drivers Josef Newgarden and Power finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
