Vegan nomads jailed for feeding starving baby only ‘breast milk, rice and potatoes’

A baby girl nearly starved to death after being given a diet of only breast milk, rice and potatoes by her ‘nomadic’ parents.

The 18-month-old was rushed to hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, where medics found that she was just hours of death, having been subjected to ‘prolonged starvation’.

One doctor told The Local that the little girl’s case was ‘worse than anything we have seen at the hospital before’.

A court heard that the baby’s parents had believed their daughter to be a ‘citizen of the world’ and had never reported her birth to any authority.

She was also never checked over by professionals and so had not had any vaccinations or early years examinations.

In court, Judge Per Norden said that although the girl had not been intentionally harmed, he found some of the parents’ views ‘remarkable’.

The couple said they both followed vegan diets and called themselves ‘nomads’ who prefer to live with friends.

The Judge singled out the mother’s view that a person could live without food or water with the correct conditioning as an example of their shocking ideology.

Prosecutor Ximena Bene pressed for two or three years imprisonment for the parents.

However, their defence lawyers argued that the couple had not caused the child’s condition and it had instead been due to a stomach bug.

The couple were both sentenced to three months behind bars for gross negligence causing bodily harm.

They were also ordered to pay 60,000 kronor (£5,000) in damages to their daughter, who they will be able to see under supervision at a care facility monitored by social services.

The girl is currently in foster care, having made a full recovery at the Queen Silvia’s Hospital, in Gothenburg.

Her father was further sentenced for several minor crimes including drugs offences and drink driving.
