‘Star Trek: Picard’ teaser: ‘Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet, admiral?’ [WATCH]
Patrick Stewart is on his way back to the “Star Trek” universe with the upcoming CBS All Access series “Star Trek: Picard,” and the streaming service has premiered a new teaser for the show, which drops hints about what the future has in store for Captain — no, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. “Fifteen years ago today, you led us out of the darkness,” says an unidentified female narrator over images of a vineyard very much not in outer space. “You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then, the unimaginable. What did that cost you? Your faith? Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself? Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet, admiral?” The teaser ends on a close-up shot of a haunted looking Picard, so it looks like there will be tragedy at the heart of this continuation of his story.
With this new series, the “Star Trek” franchise boldly goes where it hasn’t gone since 2002: the future. Yes, all the “Star Trek” properties are set in our future, but no film or TV series in the last 17 years has advanced the timeline forward. “The Next Generation” was set decades after the original William Shatner series in the 1960s. Then “Deep Space Nine” and “Voyager” were set in the same time period as “The Next Generation” and occasionally crossed over with each other. Then the 2002 film “Nemesis” was the last film to feature the “Next Generation” cast.
But the franchise never explored further than that. The UPN series “Enterprise” was a prequel. Then the J.J. Abrams movies revisited the time period of the original “Star Trek” series with Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew. And the most recent series, “Star Trek: Discovery,” is a prequel too. We haven’t seen this universe progress beyond “Nemesis” on the big or small screen since then. So this Trekker is especially eager for the franchise to extend its mythology forward rather than double back and explore earlier adventures. What will we find when “Star Trek” embarks on this new mission to explore a new (but hopefully not final) frontier?
