In the 1960s, cosmetics brand Kiehl’s introduced the Calendula Petal with the launch of Calendula Herbal Extract Toner, currently the brand’s best-selling toner globally. Native to the Mediterranean, Calendula is known for its skin-soothing properties and has been a highly regarded herb in both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for many centuries.
Ever since, Kiehl’s chemists have continued to harness the time-tested, efficacious benefits of Calendula through the 2014 launch of the Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash and in 2017, the addition of the Calendula and Aloe Soothing Hydrating Mask. Now, the company welcomes a unique addition to the Calendula collection, the new Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream which was recently unveiled in the Philippines.
“We know our customers love Calendula, so Kiehl’s chemists formulated a water cream featuring that iconic Kiehl’s ingredient and took it to the next level by infusing it with a Calendula serum, providing the efficacy of the Calendula petals in a new texture,” shared Roberta Weiss, head of product innovation for Kiehl’s.
“Through a unique formulation technique, the water cream utilizes our highest concentration of Calendula Flower Extract in a formula that helps to soothe and refresh skin while also providing a visible glow,” she added.
Micronized calendula petals
According to the brand, before the whole Calendula Petals are added to the formula for processing, they are first “steeped” at a high temperature for precisely ten minutes to allow for maximum release of the petal’s skin-soothing properties. Once the components have been released, the whole petals are then added to the formula for mixing. During the mixing phase, the petals become crushed into hundreds of micronized petals — visible only under a microscope.
Upon application, the water cream’s weightless formula releases a burst of soothing, long-lasting hydration, leaving skin feeling soft with a dewy-fresh finish. The formula gives instant relief from the feeling of skin discomfort. It also aids in strengthening the skin barrier, by helping to diminish the early signs of aging that occur when the skin barrier is compromised by environmental irritants. With continued use, the formula also visibly reduces redness.
The unique composition of Kiehl’s formula is constructed to “house” the concentrated Calendula Serum ingredients within the water phase. On application, the serum infusion transforms and delivers hundreds of micronized Calendula Petals and Calendula Extract directly to the skin.
The brand tested the formula and found the Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream has multiple benefits. Clinical testing showed the serum-infused water cream improves the look of fine dry lines, makes skin texture look and feel smoother and boosts skin’s radiance and suppleness.
