Duterte picks retired general as MWSS chief
President Rodrigo Duterte has picked retired general “Dick” Ricardo Morales as the next chairman of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).
Duterte made the announcement at the thanksgiving party thrown by senator-elect Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Thursday night in Davao City.
“Hindi ako pumapayag ng corruption. If I — pagbalik ko meron… Ang kinuha kong chairman sa MWSS, si Dick Morales, Dick. Kaya lang maputi, malikot ang utak niyan. Pero try niyo (I won’t allow any corruption. If I return it is still there…So I picked as MWSS chairman Dick Morales, Dick. But he is white, his mind is playful. But try him),” Duterte said in his speech.
“‘Yon ‘yung sundalo na RAM na nahuli sa Malacañan. Rebelde pala. I think si… ‘Yan ‘yung nasa TV na sinampal si Imelda. Taga-Davao ‘yan pero ano ‘yan… Walang nakatira… Si Dick (He was the RAM (Reform the Armed Forces Movement) [member] arrested in Malacañang. Turned out he was a rebel. I think he’s… He’s the one who was slapped by Imelda [Marcos] on TV. He’s from Davao but he’s… no one’s there… Dick),” he added.
The MWSS was previously chaired by Franklin Demonteverde, a retired judge who served in the Bacolod Regional Trial Court.
The change in the leadership of the MWSS came after Duterte threatened to fire MWSS officials and terminate contracts of water concessionaires Manila Water and Maynilad over water shortage in parts of Metro Manila and Rizal.
