Two MEPs branded dinosaurs for lack of environmental concern

Two Cyprus MEPs have been branded dinosaurs in terms of their activity on the environment by the Climate Action Network (CAN).

In view of the upcoming European elections, CAN Europe ranked the voting behaviour of current MEPs in relation to climate and energy issues into three categories: defenders, delayers and dinosaurs.

Birdlife Cyprus said on Tuesday, CAN Europe’s ranked Neoklis Sylikiotis and Takis Hadjigeorgiou of Akel as defenders; Diko’s Kostas Mavridis and Edek’s Dimitris Papadakis as delayers; and Lefteris Christoforou of Disy and Eleni Theocharous of Solidarity in the bottom tier of dinosaurs.

Highlighting the importance of the upcoming European elections for the natural environment, Birdlife Cyprus asserted that “the European Parliament has the power and the responsibility to protect nature through the Directives, the Regulations and the Policies that it passes.”

In the face of its goal to see an EP that will “protect nature, save our seas from disaster, radically change farming and make it nature-friendly, and tackle climate change,” Birdlife Cyprus issued a list of the 10 MEP hopefuls who have signed the organisation’s declaration that they are committed to work for the protection of nature within the European Parliament.

The 10 are Akel’s Sylikiotis, Marina Nikolaou and Chrysanthos (Athos) Georgiou; Doros Christodoulides, Andreas Themistocleous, and Maria Pastella of the Citizens Alliance; Alexia Sakadaki, Charalampos Theopemptou, Efi Xanthou of the Greens; and Edek’s Dimitris Papadakis.
