Sickle-wielding suspect arrested after Berkeley standoff
BERKELEY — A 40-year-old man was in county jail after his arrest early Monday in connection with an attack that left one man injured and a subsequent standoff with police, authorities said.
At 5:50 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of a man waving a sickle in the 2300 block of Parker Street. When officers came, they were told that the man had been inside a home when he attacked a homeowner and his friend, police said.
The friend, identified only as a 70-year-old Oakland man, suffered injuries to his hands and legs and was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers set up a perimeter and used a loudspeaker to order the alleged attacker, later identified as Nathan Hohmann, to exit the home. When the man did not respond, officers activated the department’s special-response team and a K-9 response team.
Around 2 a.m. Monday, special-response team members entered the home and found the man. After hitting him with less-lethal projectiles to make him comply with orders, he was arrested and taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Hohmann was later booked into Santa Rita jail on suspicion of battery with serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon that was not a firearm. He was held on $80,000 bail and faces a Wednesday morning hearing at Oakland’s Wiley Manuel courthouse, according to a county records check.
