Sky Sports reporter names three positions Arsenal want to strengthen

Arsenal will look to sign a new goalkeeper, midfielder and striker in the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table following an inconsistent first season under the management of Unai Emery.

Arsenal paid the price for failing to win four of their final five Premier League games to allow Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur to secure third and fourth place respectively.

Emery’s men did manage to qualify for the Europa League final thanks to a landslide victory over Valencia over two legs to set up a meeting with Chelsea FC in Baku at the end of the month.

The Spanish head coach has made improvements to the Arsenal team during the first 12 months of his reign but the Gunners struggled at the back.

Arsenal had the second worst defensive record of the top nine teams in the Premier League – only Manchester United conceded more times.

Now, Sky Sports News reporter Sheth has outlined where Arsenal are keen to strengthen in the summer transfer window ahead of Emery’s second season in charge.

“Arsenal’s transfer plans will, in part, be dependent on Champions League qualification. They face Chelsea in the Europa League final knowing victory means qualification to Europe’s premier competition,” Sheth told Sky Sports.

“As Cech is retiring, Emery is expected to be in the market for a new goalkeeper to challenge Bernd Leno.

“Emery is also likely to seek a replacement for Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey and could add to his attacking options after deciding against offering striker Danny Welbeck a new contract.

“Full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner is out of contract and Arsenal are yet to activate an extension.

“But defensive reinforcements may not be top of Emery’s priorities, with Arsenal set to welcome back Rob Holding and Calum Chambers – Holding is stepping up his recovery from a knee injury and Chambers’ loan spell at Fulham is now over.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 when Arsene Wenger’s men finished the campaign unbeaten.

The Gunners finished outside the top-four places for the third successive season.
