Elliott Fry is already one of the most fascinating kicker stories in professional football. Here’s a kid who was diagnosed with diabetes when he was seven. He had to fight his way onto the field at South Carolina where he became one of the best kickers in program history. Then after a failed NFL venture, he got a lucky break when his former coach Steve Spurrier called him with a job in the AAF.
Even though the league went belly up, he still managed to put together a tremendous seasons, going 14-of-14 on his field goal attempts. That earned him a contract in Chicago. From there he survived the first round of cuts at rookie minicamps, being just one of two from the original eight to do so. This has offered a chance to learn more about him.
The Good Morning Football crew on NFL Network got the chance to explore this kicker bonanza in-depth. That was when Kyle Brandt uncorked an amazing revelation about Fry’s time in college. Apparently his hold during that time also had a unique last name. One that seemed way too perfect in combination with his own.
Patrick Fish and Elliott Fry. “Fish Fry.” That is the football gods having a great laugh. It’s way too perfect. One can imagine that podcast was an instant hit down in South Carolina. Presuming Fry ends up winning the kicking job in the coming months, it may prove difficult to top. This since Pat O’Donnell would likely be his holder.
“O’Donnell Fry” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Either way, it’s another tidbit about one of the most interesting storylines the Bears have going into training camp. Fry is one of the guys it’s hard not to root for. He’s certainly come a long way and understands how to battle through trials. That alone should make him a favorite in this competition. It doesn’t seem like challenge rattle him like they used to.
