Flash Showrunner Confirms Season 5 Finale Teases Crisis Crossover
The Flash showrunner confirms that Tuesday's season 5 finale will indeed tease this fall's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. The Flash is in its fifth season, which brought back Eobard Thawne, introduced Barry's daughter from the future, and done a lot more.
Last year, The CW brought together Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl in the latest crossover called Elseworlds. The story had a being called the Monitor "test" Earth-1's capability of handling an impending crisis, by giving a magical book to a character named John Deegan. Deegan used the book to rewrite reality. This led to a humorous plot point of Oliver Queen and Barry switching identities. (The crossover also introduced Kate Kane, who will lead a Batwoman TV series of her own for The CW next season.) In the final part, Oliver convinced the Monitor to stop testing Earth, but it came at a cost. What Oliver has to give up has not been revealed. This "impending crisis" was confirmed to be Crisis on Infinite Earths.
In an interview with TVLine, Flash showrunner Todd Helbing teased Tuesday's season finale. Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash's plan to escape prison was revealed in the previous episode, and Helbing says we'll learn the full extent of the villain's plan in the finale. In addition to that, the finale's cliffhanger will play into the next season, but what about the upcoming crossover event? Helbing says the season 5 finale will "totally" tease Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Thawne will play a major part in the finale, but story details regarding Crisis on Infinite Earths are more of a mystery. With Arrow's upcoming season being the last, it's interesting to consider whether Oliver will die in the crossover. We'll know something regarding the crossover Tuesday, when season 5 of The Flash wraps up.
The Flash season 5 has had its ups and downs, but one thing has remained consistently engaging: Eobard Thawne. Throughout the season, viewers wondered if Thawne actually cared about Nora, or was just using her to escape. Based on the events of last week's episode, it appears to be the latter, but maybe there's more to it. Either way, Thawne's role in the season finale will be very interesting to see. Of course, now that viewers know Crisis on Infinite Earths will be teased, the finale should see a lot of reception. We still don't know a lot about the crossover besides the hints and teases in Elseworlds and The Flash. No matter what, it sounds like the Arrowverse will not be the same after Crisis on Infinite Earths has concluded.
The Flash season 5 finale airs Tuesday May 14th at 8pm ET on The CW.
