New Super Smash Bros. 64 Hack Adds Ganondorf to Roster

A new mod finally added The Legend of Zelda's Ganondorf to Super Smash Bros. 64 almost 20 years after the fighting game's original release. Super Smash Bros. as a franchise has always delivered a smorgasbord of crossovers from across the gaming landscape, with the latest example of this being Persona 5's Joker joining Smash as a DLC character. It's been an exciting time to be a fan of the series, and there's still a ton of mystery surrounding the next combatants that will be joining the series' latest installment, Ultimate.

Many believe that Dragon Quest's Erdrick will be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which seems plausible given a number of reports from industry insiders. While fans anticipate official character additions for that entry, they may not have expected to see a newcomer join the Nintendo 64's version of Super Smash Bros. – adding the 13th fighter to the game's existing total.

First released back in 1999, the original Super Smash Bros. game allowed 12 of Nintendo's greatest mascots to duke it out for the first time ever. Of course, many wish that more villains could have joined in on the action, which is probably why a modder known as JSsixtyfour has added Ganondorf to the game. The ROM hack, titled “Smash Remix,” released on May 11th, and it adds Zelda's King of Darkness as a character placed over the beloved Captain Falcon.

The fact that Ganondorf is featured as an alternate for Captain Falcon is a reference to the fact that the character originally debuted in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a clone of the F-Zero pilot. Many of Captain Falcon's moves can still be found in Smash Ultimate's version of Ganondorf as well, so the 64-bit reskin makes a lot of sense given the origin of Ganondorf's inclusion into the series.

Ganondorf only just returned to his Ocarina of Time design in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well, replacing his redesign from Twilight Princess entirely. As a result, the mod works out perfectly. Truth be told, it would be great to see JSsixtyfour add the likes of Bowser and Mewtwo to Super Smash Bros. 64 as well since both were considered for inclusion in the original game. As these sorts of mods are sure to take a lot of work, however, it'll likely be a time before 64-bit versions of those characters are realized by avid fans.
