5G fears reportedly being pushed by Russia TV network
A Russian news outlet is pushing out health fears for 5G technology as countries around the world prep for the eventual rollout of the technology, according to a new report.
The New York Times reports that RT America, a Russian network, has claimed that 5G signals are linked to cancer, autism, infertility, Alzheimer’s disease, and other health issues. The newspaper notes that there is no scientific support for such claims.
However, as RT America has run with the claims, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pushed for a launch of 5G in the country, according to the report.
“It’s economic warfare,” Ryan Fox, chief operating officer of New Knowledge, told the Times. “Russia doesn’t have a good 5G play, so it tries to undermine and discredit ours.”
RT America defended its coverage of 5G, telling the Times that it shows a “breadth of debate.”
RT registered as a foreign agent in November 2017, after U.S. intelligence agencies found that it was part of Russia’s efforts to sow discord in the 2016 presidential election, according to the Daily Beast.
5G technology is expected to deliver internet speeds that are much faster than current options. President Donald Trump has pushed the issue in recent months, adding that he wants the technology in the United States “as soon as possible.”
