XPO Logistics reveals deal to oversee British Gypsum’s transport network

XPO Logistics has begun managing building-product manufacturer British Gypsum's transport requirements.

The operator said that following the start of the contract, which is live now, it would create an "integrated transportation network" for its client making use of XPO Connect software.

XPO Connect is a cold-based digital freight marketplace, which it launched into the UK market earlier this year. The software matches supply with demand across the 3PL's transportation ecosystem and features virtual tools for the buying and selling of capacity.

Using this software and as part of the deal, XPO Logistics is now overseeing distribution from five British Gypsum manufacturing sites and four outbases.

Although XPO Logistics did not comment on the mix of own fleet and and sub-contracted transport attached to the contract, it did confirm "that core fleet and subcontract partners will operate with the same delivery standards and the same technology via XPO Connect".

XPO Logistics will also manage all downstream processes for the client, such as load securing, yard management and weighbridge operations.

It is also introducing new fleet dedicated to British Gypsum as part of the deal. These new vehicles will meet TfL’s forthcoming Direct Vision Standard, as well as the standard required for the advanced levels of FORS and CLOCS accreditation.

The duration of the contract was not disclosed.

Brian Fisher, distribution manager at British Gypsum, said: “XPO has the scale and vision to help us manage our growth, while serving our customers with greater efficiency and a zero-harm safety ethos.

“We look forward to a long and collaborative partnership in the UK.”

Dan Myers, MD, transport – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said: “Our team is excited to provide British Gypsum with a transformative, multi-year solution for their supply chain.

“We are grateful for the trust that British Gypsum have placed in us, and excited to deliver a game-changer in UK transport.”

British Gypsum had previously used three main subcontractors – DHL Supply Chain, CEVA Logistics and John Jempson & Sons – to manage transport across its five sites.

Approached by mototrtransport.co.uk, John Jempson & Sons declined to comment on the award of the new contract as did CEVA Logistics.

DHL Supply Chain was approached for comment.

British Gypsum is part of the Saint-Gobain Group and makes plasters, plasterboard and dry-lining products for use in the construction industry.
