Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd Eagles baseball squad hosted Johnson University to complete the home portion of their schedule on May 7th. Below are recaps of each game.
May 7
Game 1
ALC-5; JU-3
The hosts nabbed an early lead only to see it slip away in the middle innings. However, they responded in their last at-bat to earn the opening victory.
ALC scored 1 run in both the first and third innings to lead 2-0. Chance Cornett provided the big blow with a solo blast in the third.
The Royals would chip away at the deficit in the fourth. They would eventually plate 3 runs to lead 3-2.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Alice Lloyd came through in the clutch with 3 huge runs. Doubles for Dalton Cornett and Garrett Gay proved critical.
The Eagles then saw pitcher Dylyn Brown slam the door shut in the seventh to preserve the win.
At the plate, in addition to Chance Cornett’s long shot, Dalton Cornett and Gay led the way with 3 and 2 hits respectively.
Pitcher Brown earned the win. He went the distance, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while whiffing 5 batters.
The victors won the hitting battle, 10-7.
Game 2
ALC-6; JU-5
Ethan Osborne came through with a clutch hit in the bottom of the seventh to lift the hosts to a comeback victory and earn the sweep.
The visitors struck first in this contest as they scored one run in the second inning (1-0).
However, ALC responded in the next inning, assisted by a few walks and hit batters, to plate 3 runs of their own and lead 3-1.
The Eagles would answer in the sixth when they managed to squeak 1 run home to pull ahead 4-3. The question would be could they hold the advantage.
Unfortunately, the gritty guests came right back with 2 runs in the seventh to lead 5-4. If they could close out the bottom of the inning, they would earn a split on the day.
Fortunately, for the home fans, Alice Lloyd opened the last half by promptly loading the bases. With one out, Osborne came to bat. He promptly unloaded on a fastball and drove it over the left fielders head to drive in 2 runs and ensure the sweet victory.
Osborne led the squad with 2 RBI’s and was joined by Gavan Rupe and Noah Dingess in providing the ALC hits.
On the mound, three Eagle pitchers combined to allow 9 hits and 5 runs while recording 5 strikeouts. Chance Cornett earned the victory on the mound as he recorded the final 2 outs.
The Royals won the hitting battle, 9-3.
