The former welterweight champion is facing serious charges in Argentina.
Argentine boxer Carlos Baldomir, the former welterweight champion of the world and an opponent of both Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez, is headed to trial in July on charges of sexually assaulting his daughter, and is facing up to 20 years in federal prison.
Baldomir, 48, is accused of repeatedly raping his daughter, who was 8-9 years old at the time. Baldomir was originally charged in 2016. He was arrested and has been held in custody since a complaint filed by his ex-wife, the mother of the child. He has requested bail on numerous occasions and been denied.
In boxing, Baldomir sprang to sudden fame in 2006, when he stunned the world by upsetting Zab Judah to win the WBC welterweight title at Madison Square Garden. He came in with a career record of 41-9-6 and was seen as nothing more than a tune-up for Judah, who was three months away from a signed fight with Floyd Mayweather, which was highly-anticipated.
After beating Judah, Baldomir stopped Arturo Gatti in an HBO main event from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in July 2006, then was routed by Mayweather in November of that year.
From there, his career fell off. He suffered defeats to Vernon Forrest and Jackson Osei Bonsu in 2007 and 2008, and was fed to a young Canelo Alvarez in Sept. 2010, with Alvarez knocking Baldomir out in the sixth round. He faded from relevance from there, and last fought in 2014, finishing his in-ring career with a record of 49-16-6 (15 KO).
